Faux Cardboard Fireplace

I have been dreaming of having a mantlepiece forever (ok, maybe like 5 years) but I never had a place for one OR been able to find the right size once I had a spot for one! ENTER DIY MANTLE!
I built this baby from the ground up! Thank you to HGTV Handmade for creating an excellent tutorial to follow! You can find it here.

I used the HGTV Handmade tutorial to create the shape & structure of the fireplace, then from there I used some creative freedom! This is what I did differently to make it more realistic.

1. I Used Sea Spray texture additive
I added Sea Spray to my paint to create a worn, vintage look. It also helped to disguise the cardboard! You can get your Sea Spray here.
2. I added a moulding
To enhance the vintage style I wanted to create I added a moulding. I also traced around it onto an extra panel of cardboard which I then wrapped around the fireplace.
3. Match the colour of the wall to the fireplace
I didn't want the brick look nor was this project simply for Christmas! You would be shocked at the amount of people that don't realize that a) it is a faux fireplace and b) it is made of cardboard! I credit this to the fact that it is a similar colour to the wall it sits on!

As long as you use the tutorial to create the fireplace structure, you then have creative license to design whatever colour or style you desire! For some more behind the scenes on this project, head to my Instagram here.
